Church Father

Saint Athanasius of Alexandria

Saint Athanasius of Alexandria

Overview

Saint Athanasius of Alexandria (c. 296-373), also known as Saint Athanasius the Apostolic, was the twentieth Pope of Alexandria and one of the most influential early Church Fathers. As the Father and Defender of Orthodoxy, he famously fought against the Arian heresy until his peaceful departure. In the year 325, Saint Athanasius attended the Council of Nicea alongside Pope Alexandros as a deacon to fight against Arius the heretic.

His writings significantly shaped Christian theology, specifically "On the Incarnation of the Word". His defense of the Nicene faith and his influence on the Coptic Orthodox theology earned him the title "Father of Orthodoxy".

May his blessings be with us all. Amen.
